November IAS Meeting w/ Special Program: ARAN ISLE STYLE “KNIT IN” LESSON!

Irish Aran knit_441007869425084349_ncDon’t forget that IAS Adult Princess 2002 & Irish dancer extraordinaire Lisa Hunt Burgess will be teaching a FREE Irish Ceili Dance Class for us before the meeting! Please be there in comfortable shoes and clothes ready to have a good time from 6:15-7:00 pm if you have any interest in Irish social dancing! This is for all ages from the wee ones to the young-at-heart. NO PARTNER OR PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!!! Bring friends to join in the fun!

Secondly, November is the month for our FALL COOK OFF! The required ingredient for this Cook Off is OATS/OATMEAL! To be in the cooking contest, the dish you bring MUST feature oats or oatmeal, it must be homemade by you, and you must bring the recipe with you. Both sweet and savory dishes are eligible. Entries will be judged and a prize will be awarded during the meeting!

Third, let’s adopt another US military unit and do another IAS CARE PACKAGE for the holiday season. Young Colton Ethridge of our own Clan McKewl is currently serving in the US Army in Korea. This is his first deployment as well as his first time so very far from home. Just like we did last year for Skip Hunter’s unit in Afghanistan, let’s bring in items to send to Colton and his comrades-in-arms. I’ll have a box at the meeting for people to put their donations in; Colton mentioned finger foods (snacks) as being especially appreciated!

Finally, IAS Adult Princess 2009 Maureen Tobin Cahill will be teaching some basic knitting stitches in order to lead an ARAN ISLE STYLE BEGINNERS KNIT IN! Maureen learned how to knit at the age of 8 from her paternal grandmother in Newfoundland, and is extremely accomplished at it now. She also has a lot of experience teaching, so this will be a great way for us beginners who love the traditional Irish Aran knits to get started with knitting!

Everyone is welcome to attend the lesson, but in order to participate in the actual “knit in” you need to order from the Craftsy website (URL below) this “Fisherman’s Wife Cowl” kit, which is a BARGAIN at only $10! Isn’t it pretty?! I think it would make a very special Christmas present as well. It is a beginner-level project. Experienced knitters are also encouraged to help Maureen provide one-on-one help to us beginners during the knit in! http://www.craftsy.com/supplies/fishermans-wife-cowl-kit-knit/4638

The kit provides the yarn (about 100 yards of extra bulky) and the downloadable instructions. IN ADDITION, you will need to bring size #15 needles and three 1-1.5” buttons. The four stitches necessary for this project are as follows; Maureen will demonstrate these, and she and other experienced knitters in the group will circulate to help the newbies!

• Knit
• Purl
• Cabling
• Picot Bind Off
